The Hang was developed in the year 2000 and introduced at the Musikmesse Frankfurt in 2001. It is 52 cm in diameter and has a height of 24 cm.
There is no doubt that the Hang is arguably one of the most rare pieces of musical instrument that one can find of. It is with its rarity that makes it a very special kind of musical instrument. The Hang was created in 2000 and was made known to the public at the Musikmesse Frankfurt one year after, in 2001. Its dimensions are 52 cm in diameter, and it has a length of 24 cm.
The two deep drawn steel hemispheres of the Hang are hardened by a process known as gas-nitriding. Please check this page for more info.
The Hang also has two steel hemispheres which are stuck together, thereby creating a hallow space in between them. these are then hardened with the help of gas nitriding, which is a process of sticking the two steel plates together.
The side considered the ‘bottom’ has an opening (Gu) in the center which allows the generation of the bass note through Helmholtz resonance.
Meanwhile, its side, which is also called as its bottom, features an opening in its center portion. This enables the creation of bass notes that can be attributed to be similar to that o the Helmholts resonance.
When it is played in a damped way it can change in pitch similar to a talking drum.
When you play it damply, you can notice that it creates pitches which are similar to that of using a normal drum.
On the ‘top’ are seven or eight notes arranged in a tone circle in zig-zag fashion from low to high.
In its top portion, you can create and find eight noted that are organized in a tone circle. Its zig zag placement also enables it to create low to high notes.
All are tuned harmonically (with fundamental, octave and the fifth above the octave) around a low note (Ding) at the center of the tone circle. Each creation is numbered and signed.
All of these notes are also specifically tuned in a harmonizing perspective and are all revolving around a low note, which is then called as the Ding. Each creation also has its own number and is signed accordingly, making it easier to play the Hang.
There are only two people who build Hanghang, the inventors Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer.
One of the most interesting things about the Hang is that there are only two people in the world who are able to create this very rare musical instrument. These are its inventors, Felix Rohner and Sabina Scharer.
They have a little workshop in Bern where every Hang has been created.
They successfully created and developed the Hang over years of endless improvement and search for perfection. Now, it is recognized as one of the most beautiful pieces of musical instruments that can play a wide variety of tunes.
However growth of a worldwide interest in this instrument created a group of similar instruments which are colloquially referred to as “handpans”.
