Suspended Sentencing of Six Month Imprisonment and 10 Lashes for Nasrin Afzali
By IHRV | September 25, 2008
Branch 21 of the appeals court in Tehran province confirmed that it had suspended the sentence of a six-month imprisonment and 10 lashes for Nasin Agzali, issued by branch 13 of the revolutionary court.
On 13 Esfand 1385 (March 4, 2007), the trial of five women’s rights activists was planned to be held in one of the revolutionary court branches. As the subject was a hotly debated one, a number of women, especially journalists and other advocates of feminist movements, decided to participate in the court session. The court did not allow the participation of observers who are not connected to the case, and as such the participants waited for the court result in front of the court without causing any disturbance. The court started later than the scheduled time, however, and participants waited patiently outside. Later on, Tehran security forces arrived with two vans and arrested 33 of the protesting women and took them to police station on Vozara Street and then they were taken to Evin prison in the evening hours. The women were accused of gathering and collusion, endangering national security, disturbing the peace and resisting a police order by the deputy prosecutor from the revolutionary court. Ultimately, the case was sent to branch 13 of the revolutionary court, where a number of women were put on trial and then were found innocent and released, and a number of accused women, like Ms. Afzali, received six months imprisonment and 10 lashes for disturbing the peace and, considering article 25 of the Islamic penal code, stated charges were suspended for the next two years.
