Teachers Will Start Strike on February 21

By IHRV | February 12, 2009

arton2369.jpgThe Center for Educators’ Union issued a statement warning that educators will go on strike if their demands are not met by February 21.  Alireza Hashemi, the chairman of the teachers’ organization, said that, unfortunately, no other option has been left for the educators to pursue.

The chairman of the teachers’ organization in Iran believes the main issue behind the educators’ demands is in the execution of a bill for civil services or in making coordinated payments between salaries and benefits.  According to Mr. Hashemi, the bill has been shuffled back and forth between the administration and parliament since 2002, and although the bill was approved in 2006, through teachers’ interventions, the execution phase of the bill has not been exercised.

According to the bill, the government is responsible for coordinating employees’ salary levels among its agencies and among its current and retired employees.
