Detention of Mehdi Khaz-Ali

By IHRV | July 13, 2009

Dr. Mehdi Khaz-Ali, manager of the publication Hayan and founder of a cultural publication institution called Aba-Saleh, was detained by order of the special religious court in Tehran province.  Dr. Khaz-Ali received a warrant to appear in the court last Saturday, and even though he is not a religious figure, for unknown reasons he was ordered to appear in the special court on June 27.  The court normally handles the cases of religious figures.  According to the warrant, Dr. Khaz-Ali appeared in the court and he was subsequently arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.  Furthermore, security guards appeared in Dr. Khaz-Ali’s residence the other evening and conducted a search.  Readers are reminded that Dr. Khaz-Ali is a critic of the government of Mr. Ahmadinejad, and in recent days he has appeared in the mass rallies in Tehran to protest against the results of the presidential election.  Dr. Khaz-Ali is the son of Ayatullah Abulghasem Khaz-Ali, who is member of the assembly of experts.
