Masoud Bastani’s Access to Counsel and Visitors Restricted

By IHRV | September 29, 2009

Mahsa Amrabadi, the wife of Masoud Bastani, an imprisoned journalist, protested against the disallowing of visits with his attorney and his family members.

Ms. Amrabadi said: “My husband’s investigation has been completed for some time now, and he has even appeared in the court, but the appointment of his lawyer, Dr. Sharif, has not been registered by the court yet”.

After the June 12th election Ms. Amrabadi herself was detained and spent more than 70 days in Evin Prison, and she added; “It has been rumored that Masoud’s case is in the decision-making phase of the court.  His [Mr. Bastani’s] entire judicial proceeding from investigation through trial, which, according to authorities has been open to the public, has been done without any access to an attorney”.

Ms. Amrabadi reminded: “The charges made against my husband included espionage, attempts against national security, propaganda against the regime, etc.  As an ordinary journalist, Mr. Bastani does not have any access to classified information to commit espionage or pass any information to foreigners”.
