In Spite of Bail Bond Assignment, Hossein Derakhshan Still Held in Detention
By IHRV | October 22, 2009
Hossein Derakhshan is a blogger who was detained on November 1, 2008, on his return flight to Iran, and sent to Evin Prison. Mr. Derakhshan has so far spent the first eight months of his sentencing in solitary confinement in different cells inside Evin Prison. Throughout Mr. Derakhshan’s incarceration, he has been under much physical and psychological pressure.
Forced sit-ups under the shower and assaults are among the physical pressures which Mr. Derakhshan has experienced inside prison. Mr. Derakhshan’s investigators have told him that if he refuses to admit his involvement in espionage activities, agents will arrest his father and his sister, and they will be brought to Evin Prison.
With the start of widespread post-election arrests, due to a shortage of holding cells in Evin Prison, Mr. Derakhshan has been transferred to section 2A (affiliated with Revolutionary Guard Corp 325), and he was placed in a cell with a few other inmates.
Among the types of psychological pressured endured by Mr. Derakhshan have been deceptive promises regarding his eminent release, and during the Persian New Year and Fajr religious festivity period, Mr. Derakhshan had been promised his certain release, which never arrived, and he is still being held in detention.
Mr. Derakhshan’s temporary detention order has been extended several times by his investigator, most recently on October 10. At one point, Mr. Derakhshan decided to go on hunger strike as a sign protest against his condition in jail.
