Uncertain Condition of Mehdi Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh, Imprisoned Reporter

By IHRV | November 19, 2009

It has been close to five months since the detention of reporter Mehdi Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh, which took place on June 30, following post-election events.  So far, nobody from the legal or judicial administration has offered a clear response on Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh’s status or his legal case.

Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh is in detention and his release bond is set at 50,000 USD, but no one from the judiciary has contacted his family member to make arrangements for his release, which is illegal.

Based on follow-ups with Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh’s family members, in spite of the completion of all proceedings in his case and the termination of all investigations, Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh’s case was sent to court after two months of delays.  Considering the criticality of Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh health and statements made by interrogators in the Ministry of Intelligence attesting to his innocence and their recommendation for dropping his charges, it is not clear why the judiciary is refusing to resolve pending issues and take steps in closing the case.

Readers are reminded that Mr. Mohammad-Hosseinzadeh’s family members consider themselves supporters of the regime, and in a face-saving move for the regime, the family members are refusing to make any comment in this regard, nor are they holding any interviews with foreign press.  The family has chosen to follow up the case through judiciary channels and has asked the judiciary for a quick resolution in the case.
