Nader Ahsani Sentenced to One-Year Jail Term
By IHRV | December 1, 2009
The head of branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court, Judge Moghyesehei, sentenced Nader Ahsani, a leftist student, to a one-year jail term.
According to Abou-Talebi, a lawyer representing Mr. Ahsani, the charges that were read against his client in the court included spreading propaganda against the regime, taking part in gatherings and collusion to undermine national security. During the court proceedings, Mr. Ahsani’s charge of “gathering and collusion” was dropped, and in the case of his remaining charge, he received the maximum sentence of a one-year imprisonment.
According to Mr. Abou-Talebi, the court cited a report prepared by the Ministry of Intelligence, in which Mr. Ahsani had confessed to his participation in a 16-Azer ceremony (national Student Day) held in October 2007 in Tehran University, as well as presence in a gathering held in Khavaran Cemetery and taking part in a gathering in Alameh Tabatabei University held on October 30, 2007, and maintaining two Web logs with the names of “Arman Kgalgh” and “Chap Enghelabi” to promote Marxist-leaning ideas among leftist organizations.
Considering that the entire court proceeding took only six minutes, Mr. Abou-Talebi has expressed his optimism that Mr. Ahsani’s other charge might be dropped by the appeals court.
Mr. Ahsani, in discussing the case of Mehdi Gerailou, another leftist student sentenced to a five-year jail term, said: “The sentencing that was issued against him [Mr. Gerailou] in connection with ‘Propaganda against the regime’ is in obvious contradiction with the punishment sentencing, as the maximum punishment set aside for such an offense is one year”.
