Mehdieh Golrou Sentenced to One-Year Suspended Jail Term

By IHRV | December 9, 2009

As National Student Day (December 7) is approaching, Mehdieh Golrou, a student leader, was sentenced to a one-year suspended jail term, which will remain in effect for the next five years.  Ms. Golrou had been charged with spreading propaganda by publishing articles criticizing the government and by holding interviews with the foreign press.

The judge in charge of Ms. Golrou’s case said: “I hope your sentencing is not put into effect during the next few days”.

Last year, Ms. Golrou, a member of the Right to Education Defense Council, was detained during a four-day sit-in protest, and was sent to Evin Prison.  The protest had been assembled to express opposition to her expulsion from Alameh University.

Last April, Ms. Golrou was also charged with agitating public opinion through her written articles, and she was detained, then released after posting a bail bond.
