Summoning of 35 Students before Disciplinary Board for Taking Part in Student Day Gathering
By IHRV | December 19, 2009
The disciplinary board in the school of arts summoned 35 students for taking part in gatherings held on National Student Day on December 7.
Students have been charged with insulting the Supreme Leader. In a meeting held between student activists and university security personnel, student have also been warned that security guards are determined to press charges against the students.
Last week, a representative from the Supreme Leader’s office in the university, who teaches theology in the School of Arts, brought up the issue in one of his classes and said that about 90 students will be summoned within the next few weeks and that he will deliver harsh sentences against them.
What is interesting is that, according to the rules of conduct governing the disciplinary committee, a warrant must first be issued against the students, and in cases where a student refuses to appear in the hearing set up by the committee, the school administration will send the warrant to student’s residence. But school authorities, in an unprecedented and illegal action, have attempted to send warrants directly to student residences, especially the warrants for out-of-town students.
Additionally, on the evening of December 7, school guards contacted the family members of a number of students and made complaints about the events at the university, and in a threatening tone stated that the students’ educational futures are in jeopardy.
Readers are reminded that none of the students summoned before disciplinary board are members of the student center or student activists.
According to follow ups made by student activists in the School of Arts, it has become apparent that in the morning of December 8, the school records of about twenty student activists were requested by the chairman of the school. The student records are presently on the chairman’s desk and are being reviewed.
