According to a news report issued internally, Esmail Ahmadi Moghadam, the head of security guards, stated: “the increase in the total number of rapes is due to the fact that the majority of victims are less concerned about the social stigma attached to the crime, and victims are more willing to come forward and report this crime”.
The security guard’s boss did not provide any statistics on the rate of rape and stated that proof of charges against detainees is the responsibility of the judicial system.
He also stated: “announcing the identity of detainees encourages the victims to come forward and testify against them”.
The unprecedented increase in the number of reported rapes is unusual, since until several years ago Iranian women were less prone to report cases of rape due to the social stigma attached to this crime.
In a widely reported case nicknamed “persimmon grove band”, this gang confessed to more than 80 rapes. However, only three women were willing to come forward and testify against this group.
