Violence against Protestors during February 11 Demonstration
By IHRV | February 15, 2010
Security and Intelligence forces, by resorting to violence, confronted protestors who had gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution on February 11.
On this day, Iranian protestors, particularly in the cities of Tehran, Isfehan, Ahvaz and Shiraz, attended events en masse. Security, Intelligence and plainclothes agents confronted the slightest sign of protest on this day, in addition to undertaking of massive precautionary measures which began days earlier. Such measures included the detention of activists prior to the ceremonies, requiring some to give pledges, disruption in Internet service, widespread filtering of news websites, and increasing disruption in satellite, text messaging and mobile services.
Sporadic confrontations between protestors and government forces were reported in areas such as Sadeghyeh, Shahrak Gharb, Molla Sadrai Shirazi and Laleh Park in Tehran. Plainclothes agents, by rushing Mehdi Karoubi, the ex-leader of Islamic parliament, made attempts to assault him. The agents also used a similar method to attack Zahra Rahnavard, the wife of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi.
Intelligence forces, in addition to arresting Ali Karoubi (Mehdi Karoubi’s son), also arrested tens of protestors across Iran, but the exact numbers and identities of detainees are not known yet.
Readers are reminded that for the first time government forces fired paint balls against protestors and used cameras and lights in a systematic method to intimidate the protestors.
