A Journalist’s Report from Evin: Forty Prisoners Held Inside a 20-Meter Cell

By IHRV | February 25, 2010

cezaevi_hapishane.jpgZhila Bani-Yaghoub, who is married to Bahman Ahmadi-Amoui, an imprisoned reporter who was detained last June 20 and subsequently sentenced to a seven-year, four-month jail term, has recently discussed the terrible conditions existing inside the prison.

Ms. Bani-Yaghoub, quoting statements made by her husband, said that he and forty other inmates are being held inside a cell that is not more than 20 meters, and most days are spent waiting in queues for the bathroom, shower, for telephone calls and shopping.  Mr. Ahmadi-Amoui said the prison conditions are utterly pathetic, to the point that prisoners can not stretch their legs or read a book.

Last June 20, Mr. Ahmadi-Amoui was detained along with his wife and, in addition to a prison term, he was also sentenced to 74 lashes.
