Five Bahai in Shiraz Sentenced to Ten-Month Jail Terms

Five Bahai adherents residing in the city of Shiraz, Haleh Houshmandi, Kayvan Karami, Farham (Hadi) Maasoumi, Afshin Ahsanian and Vahdat Dana, each received a ten-month jail sentencing from branch one of the Revolutionary Court in this city, after they were charged with spreading propaganda against the regime.
Ms. Houshmandi and Mr. Maasoumi had previously been detained, along with a group of 54 people, while they were performing a social service in May 2006. The service was part of a program to educate poor people and was being supported by UNICEF. The program was designed in an effort to help poor and homeless children in Shiraz.
The detainees received one-year suspended sentences for spreading propaganda against the regime.
Two lawyers, Hossein Raeeci and Dadfar, are waiting to receive the official sentences before appealing.
Ms. Houshmandi, Mr. Karami, Mr. Maasoumi, Mr. Ahsanian were detained last winter, while Mr. Dana was detained last April 25.
