A Merchant from Bazaar Arrested, Whereabouts Remain Unclear

By IHRV | July 22, 2010

On the third day of protests by Bazaar merchants in Tehran, protestors have announced: “For as long as the laws enforcing hefty tax increases are not repealed, the protest will continue”.  In the meantime, one of the protest organizers was detained by Intelligence agents dressed in civilian clothing and taken to an undisclosed location.

The Bazaar merchants’ protest began in the jewelry and textile area of the Bazaar on Tuesday, July 6.  Protestors gathered in these sections of the vast Bazaar, which is considered very important, on consecutive days, and the protest spread to other areas of Bazaar as well.

On the following day, security forces using megaphones asked the protestors to return to their businesses, and in response, the protestors began rejecting the call by yelling slogans, shouting “Death to dictator”.

One of the merchants in the Bazaar said the textile business owners will continue their protest until the newly adopted tax law is repealed, and that postponing of the law to a future date is not acceptable to protestors.

According to eyewitnesses and reports, a representative from textile merchant association was arrested immediately when he was calling for another round of protest gatherings on Thursday.
