Fatemeh “Vida” Dehghanian, a cultural activist and editor of a publication, has now been detained in Evin prison for 20 days, causing concern among human rights activists.
Mr. Arash Kaikhosravi, a lawyer and himself a political activist in Iran, rejected all charges against his client in an interview with the human rights section of Tabriz News, and stated: “Ms. Dehghanian was arrested on Friday, 24 Khordad 1387 (June 13, 2008) by security guards while walking in Tehran’s Vanak Square, and was subsequently turned over to the Revolutionary Court. The day of her arrest coincided with a gathering that was held without a permit in Mellat Park to protest statements by Mr. Palizdar, who had accused government officials of economic corruption. Many participants in the park gathering were young females and minors who were later arrested.
Mr. Kaikhosravi, in reference to Ms. Dehghanian’s case and similar types of cases, further added: “In the past 20 days, I and Ms. Dehghanian’s family members have unsuccessfully gone to the Revolutionary Court and Evin prison to visit and collect her signature for legal documents. I do not believe she was arrested in connection with the gathering in the park. Even if she had participated in the gathering, according to Article 27 of the constitution, this should not be regarded as illegal and against national security. Furthermore, she did not have any role in either organizing the rally or participating in it”.
