While universities are in summer recess throughout Iran, a group of prominent law and political science professors have either received orders to retire or have been wait-listed for next term’s teaching positions.
According to the order, professors Iraj Goldozian (criminal law), Amir-Naser Katozian (civil rights), Dr. Mahmood Erfani (commerce law), and Abulghasem Gorji (Islamic law) were forced to retire. Furthermore, Mohammad Ashori (criminal justice), Dr. Jamshid Momtaz (international law), Dr. Azatullah Iraqi (labor law) and Dr. Nejad-Ali Almasi (international law) did not receive official retirement orders but have had their teaching positions wait-listed for the next term.
The political science department also has not escaped the onslaught of forced retirement, and Dr. Homayoon Ellahi, professor of Middle East and Persian Gulf, also received a retirement order. It appears that summer recess has not slowed down the wave of change in the schools of law and political science at the University of Tehran. The retirement orders were issued based on a new set of changes by Tehran University authorities, according to which professors over 70 years of age must retire. However, professors between the ages of 65 and 70 can continue teaching if granted permission by the university.
According to the contents of the order, the retirement trend has gone beyond the supposed age limit of 70 and has included some below this age. Furthermore, professors who are included in the list are among the most prominent in the university and retirement should not apply to these professors. Additionally, another glaring contradiction in this new order is the exception for the case of hojat-al-islam Abas-Ali Amid-Zanjani, former head of Tehran University. He was born in 1316 (1937) in the city of Zanjan and is now 71 years old, yet is still the chair of political Islamic philosophy, theology and Islamic law.
